I feel kind of ridiculous for admitting this, but when Jason and I were house hunting 3 years ago it never dawned on me that I might be able to use our new home for a photo location. I was so used to driving around town looking for hidden gems that hadn't been overrun with photographers, that the idea of using my own backyard was a completely foreign concept. Let's be honest - I was also used to living essentially on top of my neighbors and not in the country, so there were a lot of new ideas to adjust to. ;-)
After my son was born in the summer of 2016, I had a little bit of a "photographer identity crisis" and wasn't sure if I would work again. He was a high needs baby and I went months without being able to leave the house for more than an hour or two at a time, so when the 2016 fall portrait season hit I figured I'd sit it out and consider trying again in 2017. Then my incredible clients started reaching out and offering to drive all the way to Kiowa for their annual photo sessions so that I wouldn't have to leave the baby for very long. I was FLOORED! I didn't do a huge amount of sessions that season, but the photos that I took here on my farm were some of my all-time favorites. It was exactly what I needed to get over my photo funk (for lack of a better phrase, haha) and re-discover my love of portrait photography.
I have been photographing Matt, Jess, and the kids for years, but this was my first ever family session on the farm and it was absolute magic! We were blessed with gorgeous weather and the fields were glowing perfection at golden hour (if you have been following me for any length of time you know what a big deal that is to me!) These adorable kids couldn't have been any sweeter, and the mule and ponies even stopped by to make an appearance in a few photos!
Matt and Jess: Thank you for your support and for trusting me as your photographer for so many years! I love you guys!
